Labrador Rescue Trust to Celebrate 25 years

On the 25th of November 2013 The Labrador Rescue Trust will be celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Over the years they have handled over 10,000 cases – an average of four hundred cases each year since the formation of The Trust in 1988 which is a considerable number of dogs to have needed help.

With over one hundred and forty professional, caring and unpaid volunteers The Labrador Rescue Trust ensures that the welfare of every dog remains paramount at all times in working work tirelessly to help Labradors find new, caring homes.

In the present economic climate, more and more people are looking to The Labrador Rescue Trust Charity for help and because they don’t receive any Government or Lottery Grants towards the costs running the charity they have to raise sufficient funds on their own to keep going.

The Labrador Rescue Trust are one of the largest pedigree dog Charities in the United Kingdom and they do everything they can to ensure that any Labrador that needs help gets it.

Nutravet sponsors Mount Toubkal climb in aid of Leukaemia

A group of veterinary surgeons decided over a glass of wine to climb Mount Toubkal in Morocco in aid of Leukaemia. This is a 4167 metre Mountain in the Atlas mountains and is the highest mountain in North Africa.

After flying to Marrakesh and spending a day exploring the wonderful city they drove into the mountains and set off along the trail. Their bags were carried by a very friendly mule which enabled them to fully take in the stunning scenery. They stayed a night in dormitory at 3,300 metres and set off early the next morning to the summit, guided by a local guide named Hassan and reaching the summit after 5 hours of strenuous walking, just as the fog cleared from the summit. With a little snow on the mountains the views were fantastic.

Having descended most of the mountain that day the team were all fairly exhausted but elated. The team spirit in the group had been high and aided by a wonderful guide that helped enable every-one to reached the summit.

Present on the trip were Danny Callery, Alan Robinson, Vicky Gower, Enid Frantilla , Sterling Thomas, Michelle Lingard, Mike Bevan, Mandy Mayo, Andi Gilbody, Ian and Jackie MacQueen.

The team were grateful to Nutravet for their generous provision of t-shirts and fleeces for the climb.

Sponsors are still welcome at www.justgiving.com/MountToukbalChallenge

Over 50,000 dogs vaccinated

We recently sponsored Lisa Angus from Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre (WHVC) who was teaming up with Mission Rabies to help vaccinate 50,000 dogs against rabies in India.

We can report that the first phase of Mission Rabies has been a massive success with the trip coming to a  close on World Rabies Day (September 28th).

The teams involved managed to vaccinate 55,978 dogs against rabies across India in just 4 weeks, something that has never been achieved anywhere in the world before.

In Kolkata where Lisa was based they hit their 5,000 dog vaccination target despite getting behind in the first week due monsoon rain.

Lisa Commented “The last month has been an amazing experience, it has been fantastic to be part of such a great team of local and international volunteers. We have achieved so much, yet this is just the beginning of a much longer term plan of Mission Rabies to continue to reduce rabies to save the precious lives of people and dogs in India. Vaccination drives will continue over the coming years and animal birth control neutering projects will help to reduce the street dog populations and keep the dogs healthier and local vets will be trained to continue the good work. Thank you all so much for your donations and support for this truly worthwhile cause, it really will make a difference here in India.”

India is the rabies hotspot of the world, where a child dies of rabies every hour, most often after being fatally bitten by an infected dog. Fear of rabies in India results in hundreds of thousands of healthy dogs being inhumanely destroyed every year. Mission Rabies is just the start of a sustainable long-term project in India to vaccinate and neuter dogs, to train local vets to continue rabies control and develop a National Rabies Network, all to save the lives of people and dogs and prevent the spread of the disease.

Nutravet continue to sponsor Cartmel Cricket Club

Nutravet are delighted to continue their sponsorship of Cartmel Cricket Club for 2013 season onwards.

Cartmel Cricket Club, founded 30 June 1852 by The Earl of Burlington for workers on his Estate, and today, his ancestor, The Lord Cavendish of Furness is the Club President.

The ground is unique, as it is the only one in the country situated entirely within a race course.

The 1970’s saw a host of County players grace the turf at Cartmel, amongst them: Farokh Engineer, Brian Statham, Norman Gifford, Alan Ormrod and Imran Khan, all playing in the benefit matches that were staged, however, in 1978 a publicised match between Cartmel CC and Worcester County CC was brought about by the friendship formed over the years between Basil D’Oliveira and the Club. He brought a team of 1st Class players to play the village boys as a thank you for the years of support. Over 3000 spectators watched that match – not bad for a village with only 500 inhabitants.

In 2002 Cartmel CC celebrated its 150th anniversary with matches, a celebration dinner and a book. Titled ‘Twix Cock and Fairy’

Nutravet is proud to sponsor the Washington Riding Centre

Nutravet is proud to sponsor Nicola Jarvis of the Washington Riding Centre. Nicola is one of seven riders from the Washington Riding Centre (Tyne and Wear RDA) that have recently qualified to represent the North Region at the Riding for the Disabled National Dressage Championships in July.

The National Championships is RDA’s flagship event, bringing together hundreds of competitors of all abilities. All seven riders, whose ages range from 16 to 45, have significant challenges to overcome due to their varied disabilities. In order to qualify they were placed either 1st or 2nd in their class with a score of over 60%, at the Regional Qualifying competition in May.

Nicola is a 34 year-old, spina bifida, wheelchair user. She has ridden since she was 4 but had a break between 1994 and 2012, when she competed in wheelchair racing. She represented Great Britain in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, where she won two bronze medals in the 100m & 200m wheelchair races. She also went to Sydney in 2000 but didn’t compete due to injury. Nicola started riding again in August 2012 and this year will compete in the Grade V (Walk & Trot) class, which is open to riders of any disability who have not yet been graded according to their disability.

Nicola is planning to get graded this summer, which will mean that she will be classified according to her disability and in the future will compete against riders who experience similar physical challenges to herself.

Good luck!!

Nutravet launches Nutramega

We are proud to announce the launch of our new product range to help manage skin and coat health in dogs and cats.

Nutramega is the first natural supplement on the market to contain high levels of Omega-3’s but with no added Omega-6’s which have been shown to have potential negative effects on managing skin and coat health.

Nutramega has been formulated to support the animal’s natural systems that control inflammation. Administered in a fish gel capsule, Nutramega combines high strength Omega-3’s EPA and DHA fatty acids from fish oil with d-Biotin and Vitamin E, creating a synergistic blend that is known to soothe skin and coat conditions. Moreover, EPA and DHA are known precursors for Resolvins and Protectins – lipids which reduce the duration and magnitude of inflammation.

Nutramega provides high strength nutritional support which will help to:

  • Calm sensitive skin
  • Improve dry, flaky skin
  • Reduce itching and scratching
  • Strengthen brittle nails
  • Increase comfort

Manufactured in the UK by Nutravet, Nutramega is available for order with immediate effect and will be sold exclusively through veterinary practices. The administration rate is determined by the weight of the animal and for optimal benefit it should be administered for a minimum of 4 weeks, with continued supplementation advised for animals with chronic conditions.

As with all Nutravet products, Nutramega is manufactured with minimal environmental impact and sustainability in mind – Nutramega only contains Omega 3’s obtained from sustainably sourced oily fish while the packaging is made from 100% recycled materials.

Nutramega includes:

  • Total Omega-3s 275mg (EPA 130mg, DHA 85mg) – Works in the skin to help reduce inflammatory signals that are released in response to allergies.
  • d-Biotin (5mg) – Synthesises fatty acids and improves many skin, coat and nail conditions.
