Tips to create a healthy work life balance

In the current times, work stress can become magnified with changes in circumstances, longer hours and added pressure.

At nutravet, we work closely with our authorised veterinary practices to offer continued support and understand the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

Many vets will offer pet owners advice on how to keep their pets healthy and happy during this time, but it’s also important to also look after your own wellbeing too. Below we offer some tips to help vets and vet nurses reduce their stress and anxiety.

To help keep a healthy work-life balance, some positive things you can do include:

Get plenty of sleep

Sleep is important for physical and mental health. If we don’t get enough sleep, it can make you start to feel anxious and depressed. Try to get in a good night’s sleep and switch off from the day.

Eat well

Eating a well-balanced diet is important for our bodies to ensure we get the right nutrients to keep us healthy. Certain mineral deficiencies such as iron and vitamin B12 can result in a low mood. If you’re particularly stressed or anxious, try to reduce your caffeine intake, which can make you feel anxious and jittery.

Enjoy the sunshine

Sunlight is a great source of Vitamin D, which is important for our bodies and brains. It helps our brains to release chemicals which improves mood, like endorphins and serotonin. Try to take a break during your working day to get out into the sunshine, even if it’s only a 10-minute break.

Exercise

Keeping active is a great way to maintain good mental health. Exercise can help to eliminate low mood anxiety and stress and feeling tired. A short walk will do the trick, you don’t need to run a marathon. Activities like Yoga are also great to reducing stress and anxiety.

Do something you enjoy

Try to set aside time in your working day or week to do something for yourself, whether that be a walk, painting or enjoying your favourite TV show. If we do not spend any time doing things that we enjoy, we can become irritable and unhappy.

Ask for help

Whether it be from friends and family or co-workers or your employer, asking for help is not admitting defeat. It’s important to maintain your mental health. If you speak to your employer, they may not realise how much pressure you’re under and help to lessen the load.

Vet Mind Matters have created an informative PDF guide to enhance wellbeing and manage work stress in the veterinary workplace, which can be found here.

A great first year at Crufts

Nutravet exhibited at Crufts for the first time earlier this month (March) and enjoyed a fantastic four days at the World’s greatest dog show.

It was fabulous to see so many existing customers visit the stand and hear their feedback as to how Nutravet products are helping their pets.

The Nutravet team were on hand to answer any questions about our veterinary exclusive, natural animal health range and meet some of our four-legged fans, including Brodick (pictured) who belongs to one of our authorised stockists practice manager (Vets4Pets Paisley Phoenix).

During the event, we helped many new customers locate their nearest authorised nutravet stockist to enable them to purchase products for their pets, so they can see the benefits too.

Magician, Nick Barnes was on hand to entertain visitors to our stand, which provided some light-hearted fun.

Despite turnout being lower this year due to coronavirus worries, we were delighted with how our first year went and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Nutraflora success leads to larger boxes

Nutravet is pleased to announce it has made their latest product Nutraflora more cost effective for long-term use by introducing larger pack sizes.

Nutraflora was developed by vets for vets to be given as part of their recovery programme for animals undertaking surgery and during convalescence, but it’s unique formula also means it is the perfect solution for long-term gut health.

The introduction of bigger pack sizes of 48 capsules will be more advantageous to clients and veterinary practices as a more cost-effective solution to long-term gut health for cats and dogs.

The larger pack offer better value for money for pet owners and veterinarians, with a saving of around 15% compared to the smaller 12 capsule packs.

Developed in the UK, Nutraflora is a veterinary strength probiotic combined with Vitamin B12 and scientifically proven natural ingredients that deliver friendly bacteria, which survives the passage through the stomach and rapidly multiplies in the small intestine.

A healthy digestive system is important for optimal immune support. The gut is inhabited by billions of microbes (microflora) and these bacteria have a fundamental impact on the physiology and wellbeing of pets. Approximately 70% of the body’s immune Lymphatic tissue is located in the digestive tract, mostly in the form of ‘Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue’ (GALT). The GALT contains many types of immune cells that optimise the efficiency of the immune response and studies have shown that having healthy microflora stimulates the immune tissue.

In easy to administer sprinkle capsules, Nutraflora contains a unique formula including a special strain of natural probiotic bacteria – Enterococcus faecium – together with a prebiotic, natural antioxidants and Vitamin B12 to help maintain healthy gut function, aid the immune system and support convalescence.

Matthew Shaw, Managing Director of Nutravet commented: “Nutraflora has been very successful since its launch at the London Vet Show in 2018, but we’re always looking for ways to improve. We have taken on board feedback from practices and have made the product more advantageous for clients using it for long-term gut health. We know that our authorised veterinary practices will welcome the new pack sizes, having been fundamental in its development.”

Nutravet celebrates 10 years in business

This month (August), Nutravet is celebrating 10 years in business, helping pets.

After starting out in August 2008 with a vision to offer high quality natural alternatives to traditional veterinary products, Nutravet launched with Nutraquin+, a fast-acting joint support product sold exclusively to veterinary practices. The range took off quickly and has grown extensively over the years to now include natural support for digestive function, stress & anxiety and skin & coat health, with popular brands Nutrabio, Nutracalm and Nutramega becoming key products in the industry.

The continued success and growing demand from vet practices and pet owners has led to the company doubling in size over the last few years. This has allowed the company to expand its team of dedicated veterinary nurses who continue to support vet practices across the UK and Ireland with training and lunch & learn sessions.

The company’s ethos of selling exclusively to veterinary practices with natural, ethical and sustainable products is something that has continued since day one and still sets it apart from the competition today. It prides itself on its environmentally friendly approach and continues to drive this forward in all packaging, marketing materials and products.

Nutravet Managing Director, Matthew Shaw comments: “We’ve seen a lot of changes to the veterinary industry over the years having set up back in 2008 when the benefits of nutraceuticals were still not recognised. But we have worked hard to change the industry’s perception by focusing on developing high quality products based on scientifically proven ingredients and independent trial data. Having seen the continued success our products have had on their patients and the feedback we regularly get from pet owners and vet practices, I think the team has done a fantastic job in establishing a reputation that is second to none.

“The current changes in the veterinary marketplace that have led to the emergence of large corporate groups is an interesting development and will inevitably lead to changes in the way practices purchase and recommend products and this is something we will adapt to and build on going forward. But more importantly for veterinary practices, the continued change in both buying patterns and the self-diagnosing nature from pet owners that the internet allows means practices will need to adapt too whilst offering added value and something unique to maintain and grow footfall.

“At Nutravet we happily remain an independent company and look forward to the challenges and opportunities the next 10 years will bring. Starting with our new product, which will be launched later this year.”

Pet owner credits Nutraquin+ for dog reaching milestone age

Rescue dog Angus marked a special birthday this week thanks to Nutraquin+. Angus, a 57-variety pooch, celebrated his 20th birthday, which is a big milestone for a dog.

Thanks to Nutraquin+, Angus has found a new lease of life. His owner Barbara McDonald adopted Angus when he was nine years old and his previous owner became unwell.

Mrs McDonald said: “We put him on the joint supplement Nutraquin+ and he has a new lease of life and is bouncing around. I’m delighted he has reached such a great age.”

Living to such an age is rare for dogs and the Guinness World Records has said it is unusual for authentic records of dogs living over 20 years of age to be reported.

Angus celebrated his big milestone with a party at his local vet practice in Haddington, East Lothian.

He enjoyed the celebration with a select few of his four-legged friends where they all enjoyed special dog-friendly cake and dog beer.

Less really is more for Nutracys+

Launched at the London Vet Show 2017, the smaller Nutracys+ 20 packs will sit alongside the existing larger 220 packs, providing cat and dog owners a more affordable solution for both short and long-term use for urinary tract health.

Poor urinary tract health is a common reason for cat owners particularly to visit the vets. Due to changes in their environment and stress, cats are more likely to experience reduced urinary tract function, which if untreated can lead to more serious health problems.

Common signs of poor urinary tract health include:

  • Frequent urination

Nutracys+ has been specifically formulated by vets to provide high-strength, triple action support for health urinary tract function for both cats and dogs. Following their launch at the London Vet Show, the smaller boxes of Nutracys+ are now available for sale from Authorised Veterinary Practices.

Introducing Nutrabio for dogs and cats

Nutravet is pleased to announce the release of Nutrabio for dogs and cats.

Launched at the BSAVA Congress 2016 in Birmingham, Nutrabio is a high potency veterinary strength paste that has been specially developed by using a unique combination of proven natural ingredients to help restore the natural digestive balance in dogs and cats.

Digestion is a common reason for pet owners visiting the Vets. Bacteria can flourish and multiply extremely quickly in pets resulting in flatulence and frequent runny or loose stools.
Nutrabio helps maintain normal digestive function by containing natural Probiotic Bacteria (Enterococcus faecium) together with a unique extract of Sweet Basil, Prebiotics and Kaolin to soothe the intestinal tract.

Nutrabio benefits;

  • Helps maintain normal digestive function
  • Promotes friendly bacteria
  • Replenishes natural balance of gut bacteria
  • Binds toxins
  • Improves stool consistency
  • Highly palatable natural formula
  • Reduces flatulence

The powerful natural ingredients in Nutrabio work in the following ways:

Probiotic (Enterococcus faecium) – The high strength Nutrabio formula administers 4 billion Enterococcus faecium cells per 2ml notch to support the gut’s own healthy bacteria. Research has shown that Enterococcus faecium helps to normalise faecal consistency.

Prebiotics (FOS and MOS) – Studies have shown that supplementing prebiotics such as Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) can increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut while blocking bad bacteria.

Sweet Basil Extract – Unique to Nutrabio, Sweet Basil Extract is a palatable ingredient that has several important effects on gastrointestinal health and digestive balance.

Kaolin – Kaolin acts as an adsorbent. Adsorbents work by binding toxins and removing them from the gut. Kaolin also absorbs water helping to firm up loose stools.

Nutrabio composition:

(Feed Materials/Additives): Enterococcus faecium DSM 10663 NCIMB 10415 (4b1707), 2 x1012 cfu/Kg, Sunflower and Canola Oil, Kaolin Clay 100g/Kg, Sweet Basil Extract, Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and Yeast Extract.
